After narrowly escaping breaking my shins over a turf back and a salting tub.

2. “A wooden bowl in which dough is mixed” (Sh. 1866 Edm. Gl.).

[From Du. bak, a trough, from Fr. bac, ferry-boat, punt, also trough, mash-tub. Late Lat. bacca, “vas aquarium.” It is found in Mod.Eng. and Sc. as a technical word for a vessel used in brewing.]
