BANGI, n. (See quot.) [′bɑŋgi]Sh. 1908 Jak. (1928):
Bangi, something thick and round; (a) a thick cake, made of barley or oatmeal . . .; (b) (small) round or roundish stone, mostly in the compd. “row-b[angi]” [q.v., a roll]; (c) in the compd. slam-b[angi], great jellyfish, medusa.

[Cf. Norw. bamse, a bear, Norw. dial. bangsa, to walk heavily and clumsily. Icel. bangsi, a bear (Falk and Torp). Prob. from a root bang = something clumsy and heavy, same as Eng. bang, n. and v.]
