BAR, n.5 (See quots.)Sh. 1908 Jak. (1928):
Bar, ear, bearded ear of corn; the upper part of the straw where the ear is attached: “de b[ar] o' de strae.” [Also known to Sh.4]
Ork. 1929 Marw.:
Bar, the grain end of a sheaf, the “heads” of corn in a sheaf . . . bar means the whole mass of heads in a sheaf. Thus one speaks of the “bar-end” of the sheaf as opposed to the “tail-end.”

[Ross Norsk Ordbog Suppl. suggests barr, (1) the needles or spines of a fir-tree; (2) bere — i.e. barley; but n.4 and n.5 may both be from O.N. barð.]
