BELLIE-MANTIE, n. “The name given to the play of Blindman's-buff” (Upp. Clydes. 1825 Jam.2).
[Cf. Belly-blind and Billy-blin'. Billie is the name of a benevolent spirit in old ballads. As origin of second element Jam. suggests Fr. manteau, a cloak, which would be thrown over the head of the player. Cf. hoodman blind.]
