BENON(N), prep. and adv.

1. prep. “On the top of” (Sh. 1866 Edm. Gl.; Sh. 1914 Angus Gl.; Sh.4 1934).Sh.(D) 1899 J. Spence Sh. Folk-Lore 179:
Dat wis da stuff for greasin' your t'roat, Or aetin' benon a kettle o' slot [mixture of roe, liver and meal]!

2. adv. Over and above, on the top of (by ellipsis).Sh.(D) 1916 Burgess Rasmie's Smaa Murr (14 Dezember):
Da pör gets bread; da rich bread an butter, an shuggar benonn.
Sh.7, Sh.4 1934:
Da best dinner 'at I get is saut herrin' an' tatties, wi' a cup o' tay benon.

[Perhaps a corruption of Eng. anon, O.E. on ān(e); Sc. writers adopted anon as early as Wynton c.1420; by a wrong division of syllables, a came to be regarded as a pref. (cf. Barbour's “for the nanys” and Eng. “nonce”). In the Sh. form this a has been exchanged for be, for which cf. aforebefore, anewbenew, aneathbeneath, ahinbehin.]
