BIGD, BIGG, Bigdens, n. “A building, a house” (Sh. 1866 Edm. Gl., s.v. Bigd). Cf. Biggin(g) in Gen.Sc.Sh. 1908 Jak. (1928):
Bigg, (1) a collection of houses; (2) a large, fine house. Also derivative bigdens, a farm or village, serving as landmarks for fishermen by which to find a fishing-ground, thus: “de upper Bigdens [begdens]” and “de neder (lower) Bigdens.”

[O.N. bygð, a village, of same origin as Big(g), q.v., to build.]
