Birl, to pick knots, etc., from the surface of (cloth), in finishing its manufacture. Hence Birler, one who does this.

[N.E.D. gives birl, obs., to prick, pierce, stab, cover with punctures. Not given in D.O.S.T. Cf. Pirl, purl.]
