BOONDIE, BUNDIE, n. [′bundi]
1. "Dunlin, Tringa alpina" (Ork. 1885 C. Swainson Brit. Birds 194, bundie; 1929 Marw. boondie).
2. "Common sandpiper, Tringoides hypoleucus" (Ork. 1885 C. Swainson Brit. Birds 197). This meaning is not known to Marw.
[Marw. suggests the name is an adaptation of Norw. bunde, a variant of bundel, O.N. bundil, a bundle. This might apply to the first as an allusion to the manner in which dunlins fly in groups or "bundles," but hardly to the second.]
