BOTTOMER, n. “The person who loads and unloads the cages at the bottom or intermediate landings in a shaft” (Sc. 1886 J. Barrowman Sc. Mining Terms 12; Fif.10 1935). Also in Eng. mining usage. wm.Sc. 1842 Children in Mines Report 97:
The bottomer hooks on their whirley to the engine-rope and returns them with an empty one.
