BRAWN, Braun, n. “A male swine; synon. with Eng. boar” (Rxb. 1825 Jam.2; 1923 Watson W.-B.); “an old boar” (Gall. 1824 MacTaggart Gallov. Encycl. 89, braun). Also known to Kcb.9 1936. [brɑ:n]Sc. 1844 H. Stephens Bk. Farm II. 235:
An entire male receives, and retains ever after, the name of boar or brawn.

[O.Sc. brawn, bran(e), a boar for the table, Mid.Eng. brawne, pig-meat, O.Fr. braon, piece of meat for roasting (Godefroy), from Gmc. base *brâdo, as in O.H.Ger. brātan, O.E. bræ̂dan, to roast, fry, bræ̂de, roast meat (Sweet).
