She ran an' skream'd, an roove out at her hair, An' to the glens the gainest gate can fare.

[Phonetic variant of gan, pa.t. of ginnan, to begin, used in Mid.Eng. and E.M.E. Can was fully established in northern use early in the 14th cent. Later its identity was forgotten and it became confused with Can, v.1]
