CANDEL-BEND, n. comb. “The very thick sole-leather used for the shoes of ploughmen” (Rxb. 1825 Jam.2; 1923 Watson W.-B., obs.).

[Candel prob. a corruption of Kendal, the town where the leather was prepared + Eng. bend (-leather) (see N.E.D. s.v. bend, n.2, 4).]
