CAPPIN, n. “The leather or wood band through which the middle band of a flail passes” (Sc. 1911 S.D.D.); “a piece of green hide, firmly tied to that half of the flail called the ‘soople,' so that the ‘midkipple,' another piece of hide, may connect it to the other half, the ‘hand-staff'” (Gall. 1824 MacTaggart Gallov. Encycl. 115).
