CHATTIE, n. A pig, boar (Bnff.², Abd.⁹ 1939). Cf. Chat, n.³ [′tʃɑtɪ̢]Abd. c.1850 W. Gregor in Trans. Buchan Field Club (1894) III. 129:
A miller was annoyed by a kelpie. . . . One night he put a boar in the mill. . . . The boar stood on his defence and fought kelpie. Next night the [kelpie] came to the miller's window and called to him, “Is there a chattie i' the mill the nicht?” “Aye, there's a chattie i' the mill, an will be ever mair.”
