CHEEKASIDE, Cheekyside, adj. “Squint, askew” (Ork. 1929 Marw.); “aslant, an agricultural term” (Bwk. 1910 Scotsman (26 May), cheekyside). Used adverbially in quot. below. [′tʃikasaid (Marw.)]Per. 1739 A. Nicol Poems (1766) 49:
She in a swarff fell cheek-aside, Auld Mause she ran and held her Upright that day.

[Perhaps from O.N. keikr (Mod.Norw. keik (Falk and Torp)), bent backwards, + -settr, placed, situated (Zoëga). Marw. says the initial [tʃ] sound is due to the intrusion of a j sound after the k.]
