CHINGELS, n.pl. A rare Sc. form of St.Eng. shingles, Herpes zoster. Known to Ork.1 1940. [tʃɪŋlz]Kcd. 1925 (per Ags.12):
He was in's bed wi' the chingels.

[In N.E.D. the earliest form given is schingles, 1398; chingles appears in 1546. For ch instead of sh in Sc., cf. Chop, n.1, for shop, and Chingle.]
