CHIT, n.2 A name given to a cat: pussy. Obs. in St.Eng., but still found in n.Eng. dial. (E.D.D.). Cf. Cheet.Ayr. 1846 J. Paterson (ed.) Ballads and Songs of Ayrshire (1st Series) 112:
She wi' the besom lounged poor chit, An' syne she clapp'd my doggie.

[Un. Eng. Dict., which gives the word as provincial Eng. = a young animal, regards it as phs. a variant of kit(ten).]
