CLEARIN', CLEARING, vbl.n. A scolding, a beating (Clydes. 1808 Jam. s.v. clair). Jam. uses only the pl. form.Sc. 1825 Jam.2, s.v. clair:
I'll gi'e you your clearings.
em.Sc. (a) 1894 “I. Maclaren” Bonnie Brier Bush 233:
The doctor “gied the gudeman an awfu' clearin'.”

[O.Sc. has clair, to harm, damage, injure (of obscure origin), from 1572 (D.O.S.T.).]
