CLYPE, Clipe, n.5 and v.5

1. n. “In rick-building the one who passes on the hay or sheaves [from the forker] to the builder” (Dmf. 1925 W. A. Scott in Trans. Dmf. and Gall. Antiq. Soc. 21, ctipe; Kcb.4 c.1900, clype).

2. v. To pass sheaves from the forker to the builder of a stack.Kcb.9 1936:
Auld Edgar wis biggin' a soo stack. He had a boy clipin' an' he wis fairly tearin' on.

[Same as Clype, v.1; a curious extension from a non-physical to a physical action — from the passing on of information to the passing on of sheaves.]
