COAST, n.3 A Sc. form of Eng. cost in its pl. sense of "expenses."Ayr. 1706 Corshill Baron Court Bk. in Arch. and Hist. Collections Ayr and Wgt. (1884):
5 Dec.: Protested and taken instrumentis against me . . . for ane ryot, and for coast skaith and damnage.

[O.Sc. has cost, coist, in pl. = expenses for which repayment is made or sought, from 1426, also in phr. as above, from 1495 (D.O.S.T.). The phr. coast, skaithe and damnage is also given by Fif.1 from an Ags. private paper dated 1681.]
