COD-BAIT, n. comb. “The large sea-worm [Arenicola marina], dug from the wet sands. This is elsewhere called Lug” (Lth. 1825 Jam.2). Also found in Eng. dial. but there applied to the caddis-worm (see E.D.D.). [′kɔd′bet]
[As this is used by fishermen for bait it may simply = bait for codfish.]
