CORBAN, CORBIN, n. A small wicker basket. [′kɔrbən]Ags. 1824 J. Bowick Characters 10:
Now, with her corban, which, from curious eyes, In careful secrecy, she strives to hide.
s.Sc. 1835–40 J. M. Wilson (ed.) Tales of the Border (1857–59) VII. 28:
He maks neither wicker corbins nor quhorls like the rest o' his Droich species.

[Apparently from the root of Lat. corbis, Fr. corbeille, or from Ger. korb, but the history is obscure and the word does not appear in O.Sc. The Low Ger. has only forms in -f. The ending phs. shows influence from Cruban, n.3, a wooden pannier.]
