COVER, v. As in Eng., but used with special Sc. meaning in the phrase to cover the table = to lay the cloth (Sc. 1782 J. Sinclair Ob. Sc. Dial. 143; Abd.9 1940); also used of covering the tables or book-boards in preparation for the Communion service (Bnff.2 1940). The former meaning is given in N.E.D., last quot. 1653.
