†COW, n.5 “A rude shed erected over the mouth of a coal-pit” (Dmf. 1825 Jam.2). Obs. in Eng. since 17th cent. (N.E.D.), but still found in Eng. dial. in form coe.
[Du. kooi, a cage for birds, a pen for sheep, provincial kouw, id. (Kramer); O.H.Ger. *kouwa, M.H.Ger. kouwe (Kluge), Mod.Ger. kaue, cage, pen, shed. The Sc. form cow is etym. more correct than coe. Cf. also Coy, n.1]
