CRANES, n.pl. Stilts.Gall. 1824 MacTaggart Gallov. Encycl. 144:
Long poles, with notches fixed to them, for the feet to stand on; while they are used in wading rivers, a water 3 ft. deep has frequently been passed over with cranes.

[Perbaps so called from the resemblance of the stilts to the long legs of a crane.]
