CRINGLE, v. Gen. found as ppl.adj.

1. To fasten with a Cring (Sh. 1866 Edm. Gl.). Cf. Eng. dial. cringle, a withe or rope for fastening a gate, etc. (E.D.D.).

2. To twist.Ork.(D) 1880 Dennison Sketch Bk. 5:
Bit he saw 'at aen o' her ends wus a' cringled ap wi' being sae lang i' the sea.

[O.Sc. has cringlit, tied up or to another (lamb), 1604 (D.O.S.T.); Norw. dial. kringla, to lay in a circle (of a rope) (Torp).]
