CROP, v.1 In phr. to crop the causey, to walk boldly in the street, lit. to keep the uppermost part (the crown) of the causeway. Cf. Crap, n.1, 4 (3). Arch.Abd. 1887 J. Bulloch The Pynours iv.:
The merchant burgesses as a class proudly cropt the causey.
Abd. 1909 J.T. Jeannie Jaffrey xiii.:
On the army's arrival, many of the leading Covenanters returned and bravely "cropped the causey."
