CUDDING, CUDDIN, n. The char, a name given to any trout of the genus Salvelinus.Ayr. 1795 Stat. Acc.1 III. 589:
In both loch and river [Doon] there are salmon, red and white trouts, and cuddings, or charr.
Gall. 1692 A. Symson Large Descr. of Gall. (1823) 150:
A Cuddin is a little fish, as big as a large trout, . . . its belly a pure red colour . . . only found in . . . Loch Grenoch.
