CUDE, n.1 A name given to the butler or storekeeper at George Heriot's Hospital (Edb. 1898 J. Baillie Walter Crighton, Gl.). [kød, kɪd]Edb. 1910 Scotsman (3 Sept.):
The butler [of George Heriot's], a very important official, had the curious name of “Cude.”

Comb.: cude's wash, “small beer, occasionally given instead of milk to the porridge at supper” (Edb. 1845 F. W. Bedford Hist. G. Heriot's Hospital (1859) 342).Ib. 346:
I wasna lang of kemping my pot and drinking the cude's wash that night.
