DAMP, v. Variant of Eng. damn, to condemn.Sc. 1728 Ramsay Poems II. 15:
Pains through thy Shoulders, Arms, and Throat and Shins, Will threaten Death, and damp thee with thy Sins.

[Damp, irreg. variant of earlier dampne, is found in O.Sc. 1513 (D.O.S.T.), from O.Fr. dampner (Lat. damnare with excrescent p), Mod.Fr. damner. The form damp is found in Eng. in 14th cent. (N.E.D.).]
