DARGLE, n. ? A river-valley.Sc. 1824 Scott Redgauntlet Letter xi.:
Glen, nor dargle, nor mountain, nor cave could hide the puir hill folk.

[The district on the banks of the River Dargle, which flows into the sea near Bray, is known as The Dargle and is a beauty spot popular with Dublin people. Perhaps Scott had heard of this spot and used the name as a general name for any river valley. Dargle comes from Ir. and Gael. dearg, red, in reference to the colour of the soil.]
