DICK, n.2 A schoolmaster (Abd. 1916 T.S.D.C. II.; Mearns 6 1949). Also dicker and in comb. Domine dick, “a name applied irreverently to a country teacher” (Ags.1 1918).Mearns 1925 (per Ags.12):
The dicker gie'd the laddie the bonny side o' the door.

[Origin doubtful. Phs. from the name of James Dick (1743–1828), founder of the Dick Bequest for the maintenance of parish schoolmasters in Aberdeen, Banff and Moray, or from the proper name Dick to alliterate with Dominie.]
