EAR-BOARD, EARBREAD (see etym. note), n. Of a cart: (1) the front board (Rxb. 1923 Watson W.-B.); (2) the cross-bar (Ib.); (3) the side-board (Bwk. 1942 Wettstein). Bwk. 1877 Joiner's Acct. Bk. MS. (1 Oct.):
To reparing a cart with a new Earbread and 2 iron Plates.

[Formed by wrong division from ‘a near board', as contrasted with backboard. Cf. w.Yks. ear-breed, “the cross beam or projecting beam at each end of a cart on which the body of the cart rests” (E.D.D. Suppl.).]
