¶ECHO-STANE, n. comb. “A black hard stone, full of holes, common in meadows and bogs. They can be made into good channel-stanes. Their cavities make them of a sound-returning nature, hence the name” (Gall. 1824 MacTaggart Gallov. Encycl. 193).
