EVENER, n. Also †evenner (Lth. 1825 Jam.2). An instrument or appliance used by weavers for spreading out the yarn on the beam (Fif.3 1930, evener; Knr.1 1950). Cf. Ravel, n.1, id. Fif. 1864 St Andrews Gaz. (9 April):
Elizabeth Smith assaulted Jean Culbert, first with an 'evener,' and then with her clenched fists, in a weaver's shop in the Kirkgate.
