FARFAR, n. The local Ags. form of Forfar, the county town of Angus (Ags. 1853 W. Blair Aberbrothock 76, 1948 J. C. Rodger Lang Strang 2). [′farfər] Phrs.: (1) a Farfar shot, in bowls, a hit-or-miss shot (Ags.16, Fif.14 1947); (2) to play Farfar, to play the lower of two or more cards which are in sequence, even when there is no advantage in doing so (Ags. 1953 Forfar Dispatch (10 Sept.)). (3) Forfar latchkey, a jocular name for a corkscrew (Ags. 1961 People's Jnl. (14 Jan.)
