FIRTHIE, n. Also firthy; ferthie (Cai. 1916 T.S.D.C. II.). A boat built on or for use on a firth, esp. the Pentland or Moray Firths.Ork. 1883 Fish and Fisheries (ed. D. Herbert) 335:
At present scarce one of the old yawls remains, being almost if not entirely supplanted by the firthy and the smack rig.
Ork.1 1949:
In my young days it was a fine sight to see the herring fleet sailing out from Stronsay. Two of the rigs were called Firthie and Zulu.
