‡FITCHACK, n. Also fitchie, fidgie. A pudding of oatmeal, suet and onions (Mry. 1911 Trans. Bnff. Field Club 108, fidgie; Upper Bnff. 1916 T.S.D.C. II.), “used as an accompaniment to fish soup, Scotch broth, etc.” (Bnff.3 1941).
[Orig. doubtful. Phs. for fite-Jock. See Fite, adj., comb. 5. and for Jock = pudding, cf. Jockety-Wat, Jocky-Haggis, s.v. Jock, n., 4. (15). Or an extended meaning of fitchack, s.v. Fitch, n.2, from a fancied similarity to its ripe pod.]
