FLATE, n. Appar. a Sc. spelling of Eng. flight (of stairs).Sc. 1746 Lyon in Mourning (S.H.S.) II. 301:
Accordingly he was tossd to the stair head from one to another, and there one of a considerable character gave him a toss that he never touchd the stair untill he was at the foot of the first flate of it.

[For the vowel sound [e] representing Eng. [aɪ], cf. O.Sc. spellings quhayte, said (side), the variant forms of Dyke, and Burns's rhymes squires, shires with affairs, prayers in The Author's Earnest Cry and Prayer i.]
