FOONGIL, n. Also foongel (Ags. 1888 Arbroath Guide (28 April)); fungel. A lazy, work-shy person, a slovenly, ungainly or careless individual (Kcd. c.1870; Ags. 1952); “an uncouth, suspicious-looking person or beast” (Sc. 1911 S.D.D., fungel). [′fu:ndʒəl]Ags. 1893 Arbroath Guide (11 Feb.) 4:
She drove Francie frae the fireside, ca'd him an' ill-daein' useless foongil.

[Etym. doubtful. Phs. an intensive form from Foonge, in the sense of a wheedling, parasitical person.]
