GALE, n. In phr. a gale of geese, “a flock of geese” (Rxb. (Teviotd.) 1825 Jam.).

[Of doubtful authenticity. Phs. an extended usage of Eng. gale. The word appears to be in the same category as a bevy of quails, covey of partridges, trip of goat, flight of doves, skulk of foxes, spring of teals, etc.]
