GNAT, v., n.

I. v. To gnaw (Ags. 1808 Jam.), nibble, to gnash or grind the teeth (Ib.; ‡Abd. 1954).

II. n. A (small) bite, a snap (Id.).

[Mainly imit. For the form, cf. Natter and Norw. dial. knatta, to cut into small pieces, to chop, Sw. dial. knatta, to gnaw off.]
