An uncommon kind of fish called gobichs, . . . made its appearance on this coast about 3 years ago; . . . The body of this fish was long, and its head resembled that of a serpent's; its weight never exceeded 3 or 4 ounces.

[Prob. a substantival use of Gael. gobach, beaked (from gob, bill, beak) = the beaked one, from the long thin snout of the fish. Cf. Gael. gobag, sand-eel.]
