†GOIEK, n. Also goiack, goieg. A young coal-fish, Gadus virens, in its second year; mostly used as a tabu-name at sea (Sh. 1866 Edm. Gl., goiack, 1908 Jak. (1928)). [′gɔiək, -əg]
[Jak. derives tentatively from O.N. gaukr, cuckoo, fool, simpleton, and supports this by quoting Norw. gaukpale, a two-year-old coalfish. The phonology is somewhat obscure. Cf. Dan. gjøg, cuckoo.]
