GOWDY-DUCK, n.comb. Also goudie-, gowdi-. The golden-eye-duck, Glaucionetta clangula (Sh. 1809 A. Edmonston Zetland II. 255; Sh., Ork. 1837 R. Dunn Ornithol. Guide 96; Ork., e.Lth. 1886 C. Swainson Brit. Birds 160; Sh.10 1955). Also gowdie; gowdnie, id. (Fif. 1825 Jam.). Abd. 1760 W. Smith MS. Diary (14 Jan.):
There's a lesser fowl called Gowdies resembling a Duck, which are of the fishy kind as they frequent the Sea Shoar.

[Gowdy = goldy, golden (see P.L.D. § 78.2.) + duck. The form gowdnie may be a Sc. form of Eng. golden-eye, id.]
