HAAVIE, n. Also havie. [′hɑ: vi]
1. A knee-shaped piece of wood fixed to the end of a keel to secure it to the stern of a boat (Ork. 1929 Marw., Ork.2 1956).
2. A similar piece of wood built into the wall of a byre or stable to which animals were tethered.Ork. 1911 Old-Lore Misc. IV. ii. 78:
A piece of wood called a lithie or havie, was built into the wall at the head of each animal, and to this they were tied with a home-made band.
