HAB-AND-JOCK, adj.phr. See quot.Rxb. 1827 R. Chambers Picture Scot. I. 137:
Their mode of choosing, or rather forming sides [in the Galashiels shinty game], was very singular. Hab and Jock, Tom and Andrew, Adam and Dan, played against all the other names in the town. On this account, the festival was usually called “the day o' the Hab-and-Jock Ba.”
