HOCKNIE, n. Also hokni; hokner (Sh. a.1838 Jam. MSS. XI. 107); hokken (Jak.), and met. form honkie (Sh. 1932 J. Saxby Trad. Lore 195). A Sh. fisherman's tabu-name for a horse (Sh. 1866 Edm. Gl., hocknie, 1914 Angus Gl., hokni); applied also but evid. erroneously to a dog (Sh. 1910 Old-Lore Misc. III. i. 40, hokner), phs. by confusion with Hocken.
