HÜDIK, n. Also hudek, hødek, hoodik; hoder, høder, and dim. hutrikin (Sh. 1881 Williamson MSS.). A Sh. fisherman's tabu-name for a gaff or fish-spear (Sh. 1914 Angus Gl.), a Huggie-staff.Sh. 1897 J. Jakobsen Dial. Shet. 28:
The staff with which the fisherman strikes into the fish, was called at the haaf by the North Isles fishermen “de hødik (hoodik) or hoder.”
