JAVE, n. The upper crust of a batch loaf of bread (Sc. 1902 E.D.D.). [dʒe:v]Sc. 1919 T.S.D.C. III.:
A famous Scottish preacher born in Edinburgh in 1810, who lived in Glasgow from 1856–1892, was asked what part of the loaf he would like. He answered that he did not mind whether it was “the jave or the femmet”.
